Dojo Holiday Party

We have another great Holiday party in the books! Good people, good food and lots of fun. Always great to catch up with so many of our members. The biggest mention of the night was Matt Ashby getting promoted to his Shodan (first degree black belt) after putting in more years than he should have. He started with us during a Nage Waza workshop (throwing techniques) in 2007 and never stopped coming since. Matt has also been teaching some of our youth programs for quite some time and always gets compliments from them. Congrats and thank you for all of your good training!

Japan City wide Sumo Tournament and IBJJF Grappling Tournament Results

As I mentioned we recently had the city wide kids sumo tournament. Our Yoshin Dojo Japan Members did exceptionally well. Some of them won several matches throughout the day. Today, we had the All Japan JBJJF grappling tournament. It was a large tournament with some famous names present. We originally had 6 competitors from our school but had to pull one due to broken arm during training. So we went along with 5 of our students and spent the entire day in Tokyo. Out of our 5 competitors we won 4 medals today. That is a great accomplishment since this is one of Japan's larger taikai (tournaments) with some strong schools competing. Everyone was asking who the people in the Yoshin Dojo Japan T'shirts were. At the end of the day we got 1 gold medal, 1 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. Everyone fought really hard and had some difficult matches. I was so proud of everyone and after all the tears and sweat were wiped away I think everyone learned something deeply about themselves. I have already posted a few pics on the Yoshin Dojo Japan FB page but more will follow. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon and sharing more stories about Yoshin Dojo Japan and everything else!!

July 18, 2009

We spent Saturday afternoon training with the Kuki family short sword kata. These techniques were passed down within the Kukishin Ryu, a traditional system of samurai arts. The techniques consist mainly of defenses against a person wielding a long sword with a special emphasis on how to close the distance on the longer weapon. The kata also rely heavily on the mindset of the defender since you wield the shorter weapon. These techniques are fairly advanced in our system and usually fall within the Yondan (4th degree black belt) requirements. This was a good opportunity for everyone to gain a better understanding of some of our historical material. The workshop fee also included a small samurai style lunch which consisted of Umeboshi Onigiri and Takuan.

June 20, 2009

One our best parties ever! About 75 people in attendance with plenty of fun for everyone. The dojo demonstrations looked good. The Wasabi challenge was very entertaining. The Japanese game of Shiritori with the Japanese children in attendance was fun as was the balance exercises. The Kendo matches after hours...well with the exception of the armor, they didn't look like any kendo I have ever seen. There were Naginata, Kyoketsu shoge and assorted beverages being used. Great fun for everyone this time around. Shidoshi Vince Weis and his wife were our special guests from Ohio. We literally had so many guests from Japan that there are too many to name. Thanks to everyone for sharing this evening with our Dojo!

Japanese Jujutsu Workshop in Muhlenberg KY

We had a great time in Muhlenberg KY this past weekend! Saturday morning was started off with Mr. Noel Flores treating everyone with some fundamental and tactical shooting classes on the WHFRTC military base. Several hours were dedicated to making everyones basics stronger and reinforcing proper technique and it sounded like everyone that attended had a great time. Sunday morning started with some private training of the Kukishin Ryu Hanbo jutsu techniques. We worked on the Chuden (middle level) material as well as the Okuden (deepest level) techniques. We then did 6 tests for the students of the Muhlenberg dojo. Everyone is really coming along down there and the group is continuing to expand. Congrats to everyone that tested! Please train hard to earn what you have. The workshop later that afternoon went really well and everyone was tired toward the end. We worked on some very specific techniques, focusing on the basic points of each and then explored the counters to the techniques we learned. We also worked a variety of shime waza (choking techniques) and the finer points on how to make them work. I want to personally thank everyone that attended and I hope everyone learned something from the training. As usual, Mr. Daniel and Vanessa Rolley were great hosts and the event was ran smoothly. The event lasted from 7:30pm until about 10:30 on Friday April 18th. No need to mention that after the event we were as tired as the young guys! Special thanks to Mr. Todd Erwin from Western Kentucky for assisting me in the event.

We worked on a variety of topics on unarmed martial arts during the training and everyone seemed to have a great time. Mr. Pettibone and Mr. Whiteagle were very kind to us as were many others during our travels with the Hochunk people. Sharing some of the culture with them was great for all of us. The weather was beautiful, campfire and ranch awesome, the night skies and Indian history stories were cool, the buffalo meat and white corn was a delicious treat and the friendship shared was the best part of the trip. The workshop this past Saturday was great fun and packed with information. I would like to thank Noel Flores and Chuck Shuff for sharing a bunch of material and equipment with us. We started with some warm up drills and basic shooting theories. Afterward we did a number of conceal and carry draws and shooting while in motion. We did some accuracy drills as well as some long range shooting. We then shot some steel targets for speed and timing. The most interesting part of the session was doing car jacking defense and shooting from within and behind a vehicle as well as how to exit in a team while still returning fire. Thanks to Noel Flores for providing/risking his own vehicle for the exercises. Luckily no one shot it up! Overall a great learning experience for everyone involved and I for one am looking forward for the next one. Please check back here for some pics/videos of the event! This is another workshop that really makes our school stand above all the rest! You just can't get this type of training anywhere else.

Fundamental Shooting Workshop

Thanks to everyone that attended our fundamental Teppojutsu course. A special thanks to Chuck Shuff and Noel Flores for doing most of the instruction! This was essentially our level one course that we will be adding to our dojo as a more formal shooting curriculum. The session ran about 5 hours so plenty of material was covered. We started with basic safety, shooting positions, grip and other fundamentals which everyone enjoyed. We then covered some other topics such as drawing from holster, conceal and carry draw, 4 directional draw and shoot as well as a variety of other shooting drills. We then worked on advanced accuracy for those ready and the goal was to get 3 shots in an inch pattern in the occular window. Very challenging. We then did scenario based shooting such as having mulitiple targets to address, shooting from a table and a variety of other timed drills. The day of training went very well and everyone learned a great deal about shooting and firearms self defense. We will be looking forward to doing another workshop in the near future. A good size group all met at the dojo early and did a short 30 minute sword basics training session. We then traveled to a nearby waterfall where we first did 1000 cuts and then challenged the cold waterfall. Everyone did well during the intense training. Afterward we had lunch together and then did about an hour of heavy endurance grappling at the dojo. Later that evening some of us met up again for the season finale of The Ultimate Fighter TV show. Good training everyone! Ganbatte Kudasai!
